Black Screen on startup

I have a 1.33 15" G4 Powerbook running tiger 10.4.11. My wife was working on it this morning, and it came unplugged and died. (the battery we bought last year is already dead). She replugged it and rebooted. The boot tone chimes, but the screen now stays black. Tried safe boot and disc boot, but can't tell if they are doing anything since screen is still black. For the past year or so, on bootup, the screen would have noisy lines on it. we would close it, then wake it up and lines were gone, and screen looked great. Any ideas on something we could try?

OK, first thing to try is a PRAM reset, by holding down the cmd-option-P-R keys at boot until you hear the boot tone a second time.

When it comes up from the second tone, wait a couple of minutes, then check the brightness control on the keyboard and see if pressing the increase key F2 (I think ... I just look for the icon, myself) brings the display up.

If that works, you may have a failed or failing backup battery as well.
